Let me say up front that holidays are wonderful, necessary, and too rare. We all need time away from work and a little shake-up in our routine now and then. We just need to spread them out a little better. Because unless you're a federal worker, there are no holidays from now until Memorial Day (Easter sadly doesn't count because no one gets time off for Easter except school kids). Think about it- let's start from Memorial Day. We get that holiday at the end of May. June is holiday free, then we have Independence Day. September brings Labor Day, and then in a space of five weeks we have Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. Then the long void from January 1 until the end of May.
That's not really what I'm writing about, though. I don't like the complete disruption of my routines caused by the time between Christmas and New Years. Actually, it starts even earlier, in mid-December. The shopping becomes frenzied. TV shows go into reruns in early December to make way for Christmas specials (most of which are old, and I love them, but I've seen most of them enough that I can quote them). My favorite radio talk show hosts go on vacation and I'm stuck with either "best of" shows or substitutes. Things at work crawl because half of the staff takes time off. People who don't drive all year dust off the family sedan and hit the road, putting all of us in danger.
I needed to take time off for ankle surgery, and I decided this was an excellent time to have my ankle fused. Dumb. Here I've been, stuck in bed or in the recliner without my favorite TV shows or talk radio hosts, since mid-December. But tomorrow is January 3rd (the first was on a Sunday) and some life will get back to normal. Hooray!!!!! BUT....just in time for the primary election season to begin. Groooooaaan. All of my favorite shows will be focused on each primary, and many of my TV shows will be interrupted by election coverage. Arg.
